MODEL RELEASED. Shoulder joint re-surfacing surgery. Image 2 of 11. Close-up of surgery to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. This surgery, known as a hemiarthroplasty, inserts a mushroom-shaped prosthetic metal 'cap' on top of the worn ball,at the top of the arm bone (humerus). This provides a new, smooth surface. A pin on the underside of the cap, inserted into the top of the bone, holds the prosthesis in place. For images of the prosthetic 'cap' see C001/4576 and C001/4578 | |
