Atomic bombing crews and commanders, 1945. Flight and support crews of the 509th Composite Group at North Field, an airfield on Tinian in the Mariana Islands, where preparations took place for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They are being addressed by three senior US Navy and US Army officers known as the 'Tinian Joint Chiefs'. Talking from 0:17 is Rear Admiral William R. Purnell. From 0:23 are Captain William S. Parsons (left) and Brigadier General Thomas F. Farrell (right). This airfield was where US B-29 bombers took off from on their missions to drop the atomic bombs 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' on the two Japanese cities. The bombings took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, devastating the cities and killing hundreds of thousands, leading to a swift end to World War II. Deployment of the US Air Force's 509th Composite Group to Tinian began in May 1945. | |
