Lunar Flying Unit testing, 1960s. Footage of a test flight of a Lunar Flying Unit (LFU) to be used by NASA astronauts exploring on the surface of the Moon. The Apollo programme took place between 1961 and 1972, with NASA astronauts achieving six landings on the Moon. The astronauts explored the lunar surface in spacesuits with Portable Life Support System (PLSS) backpacks. Later missions also used the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The exploration range was limited by the need for astronauts to be able to walk back to the Lunar Module (LM) if the rover failed. One proposal to extend the exploration range was to develop a Lunar Flying Unit (LFU). This would be a rocket-propelled backpack, able to carry two astronauts if one needed to be rescued. At least two designs were submitted (this is the Bell Aerosystems Rocket Belt Team). In 1969, NASA opted to use rovers instead of rocket-propelled backpacks for lunar exploration. | |
