Apollo 13 mission control, watching splashdown recovery. Footage of mission controllers watching the recovery operations after the splashdown of the Apollo 13 crew. Two days into this lunar mission of April 1970, an oxygen tank exploded and damaged the spacecraft. The crew of three survived in one of the modules for four days as the spacecraft passed behind the Moon and back towards Earth. The rescue plan devised by mission control worked, and the crew splashed down on 17 April 1970. The key people in mission control included lead Flight Director Gene Kranz, the director of flight crew operations Deke Slayton, and mission director Chester M. Lee. Three flight directors seen in this clip are: Glynn S. Lunney (start of clip), Eugene F. Kranz (0:07 to 0:20) and Gerald D. Griffin (o:20 to 0:30). Filmed at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, USA. | |
