Paramecium. Light microscope footage of ciliate protozoan Paramecium sp. showing pulsation cycles of two contractile vacuoles (red rings). These act as osmotic regulators, actively expelling excess water out of the cell. Between them is the oral groove with beating cilia which create a current to draw in food particles. Paramecium are abundant in water and soil, feeding mainly on bacteria. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination.
