Lysozyme action on a bacterial wall. Animation showing the effect of lysozymes, enzymes that act to break down bacterial cell walls. This cell wall (grey) is shown at lower centre, with the bacterial membrane (yellow and brown) below it. The molecular structure of the bacterial cell wall is at upper centre, consisting of glycosaminoglycans. Lysozyme (molecule at upper right) acts on the link between N–acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid and in the presence of water hydrolyses the bond and breaks it. This causes destruction of the bacterial wall, By destroying the bacterial wall, lysozyme acts as a bactericide. For this animation with labels, see K004/3283.
