Cell transport function of plasmodesmata. Animation illustrating the cellular transport function of structures called plasmodesmata (yellow). These bridge cell walls and membranes (down centre), connecting the cytoplasms of adjacent cells in higher plants. The tubule-like cavities running between each plasmodesma provides an intercellular channel for a variety of molecules such as metabolites and signalling compounds. The cell membrane is green.
