Close-up of a deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) clambering across human skin and hair. Deer ticks are arachnids that feed on blood, and they have saw-toothed mouthparts that make them hard to remove once attached. The deer tick is an important vector for Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, and causes a skin rash, fever and fatigue. If untreated, the disease may progress to cause joint pain, nerve pain and behavioural changes, and it can even be fatal in some cases. | |
