In normal conditions, healthy plant cells are turgid, meaning that the cell membrane (yellow) is in full contact with the rigid cell wall (green). If water leaves the cell, as the red and blue water molecules do here, the cell membrane becomes detached from the cell wall, a condition called plasmolysis. This leads to the plant losing rigidity, which is seen as wilting. Plant cells store water in large vacuoles (pale blue) within their cytoplasm (grey). Water moves between the inside and outside of the cell due to osmosis, the diffusion of water to an area of higher solute concentration.
