The effects of water and wind erosion can be seen in this view of hoodoo rock formation in the Valley of the Gods, Utah. Hoodoos are erosional remnants that stand above the surrounding landscape due to its harder caprock. The formations here are composed of Cedar Mesa sandstone, the same rock that forms the formations in nearby Monument Valley. The red color of the sand and rocks derives from particles of iron oxides. | |
