| A Didinium swims into a population of Paramecium caudatum stabbing one with a needle-like seizing organ. The Paramecium discharges trichocysts, hairlike structures meant to repel a predator, but not known to bother Didinia. Inexplicably the Didinium ends its attack and swims away, leaving behind a deformed and dying Paramecium. Didinia are ciliates and can reach sizes of 150-200 microns. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination. | |
