Light microscopy of the parasitic nematode worm Brugia malayi, cause of elephantiasis in humans. Elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis) is a disease that causes massive and debilitating swelling and thickening of the skin, particularly in the legs, giving them the appearance of elephants' legs. It affects more than 100 million people, making it one of the most common causes of disability in the world. The symptoms are produced when the worms invade the lymphatic system, blocking the normal flow of lymph fluid and causing oedema in the lower body. Brugia malayi is transmitted by the bites of tropical mosquitoes, including Aedes and Anopheles sp. Treatment is with drugs such as diethylcarbamazine. | |
