Illustration of the view from the rim of Valles Marineris canyon on Mars. The Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars is more than 4000 kilometers long, up to 200 kilometers wide, and up to 7 kilometers deep, which makes it even larger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. These canyons are located on the southeastern edge of the Tharsis Bulge and were formed by faulting during the creation of Tharsis. Over time, the canyons have been further shaped by water and wind erosion. | |
