Scalp of a 74 year old African American patient who has had a Bowen's disease lesion excised. This condition, also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ, is an early form of skin cancer confined to the outer most layer of cells in the skin. It is thought to develop partly as a result of long-term sun exposure and is potentially malignant (cancerous). The red scaly lesions are removed surgically or destroyed by freezing or cauterisation (heat treatment). | |
