Pyoderma gangrenosum on a 40 year old white male patient's back. This disease causes painful ulcers on the skin. It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. This case started after surgery to treat the intestinal disease diverticulitis. Treatment is with steroids and immunosuppressant drugs, although it can take many months for the ulcers to heal.
