Hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) lesions on the hand of a 4 year old boy. HFMD is a common disease of young children. It is caused by a group of enteroviruses, with the most common cause of infection being coxsackievirus A16. It is a mild disease that starts with a sore throat, loss of appetite and fever, followed by formation of small spots on that hands, feet and mouth that may blister. It usually resolves within seven to ten days without the need for treatment. | |
