Mussels (Bathymodiolus sp.), sea urchins (class Echinoidea, white and spiny) and methane ice (white, centre) on and beneath a carbonate overhang in the deep ocean. Mussels are the numerous shells visible, with live mussels clinging to the overhang and the remains of dead mussels below. Methane ice, or methane clathrate, can form under the high pressure and low temperatures found in the deep ocean. Certain bacteria are able to convert methane ice into energy. | |
