Illustration of a low number of platelets, or thrombocytes, (white) in the blood stream, a condition known as thrombocytopaenia. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting and therefore thrombocytopenia leads to bruising and bleeding that can be fatal. It has a number of causes, and may result from an underproduction of platelets, or the increased destruction of platelets. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the thrombocytopaenia. | |
