The Hellenic Radio Telescope THERMOpYlae with a 30m parabolic antenna on an alt-azimuth mount is located in the Thermopile Telecommunication Station at the south-eastern point of Europe in the region of Skarfeia near Thermopylae. The area is the historical site of the battle between Leonidas and his 300 Spartans and Darius the Persian King and his troops. The site also supports the HTO Thermopylae teleport for internet communications. It is the first radio telescope in Greece and at the southernmost end of Europe is currently being created as part of a research collaboration involving HERON LAB from Department of Physics of University of Thessaly. In addition OTE operates two satellite teleports in Greece, at Nemea and here at Thermopylae | |
