Illustration showing Neptune's orbit (red arrow) around the Sun. Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun, with an average distance from it of about 4.5 billion kilometres. It takes nearly 165 years to orbit the Sun but only just over 16 hours to rotate (green arrows) around its own axis. Its axis of rotation is tilted to the plane of its orbit by 28 degrees, giving rise to seasons, although the difference in the seasons is less marked due to the distance from the Sun.
