| Self-portrait of Goya (1746-1828) with Dr Arrieta. Goya fell seriously ill in 1819 with a serious and identified illness. The image shows him being treated by Dr Arrieta. Ironically, as with the Spanish public, Goya had a poor opinion of doctors. However he trusted Dr Arrieta who was an eminent physician. Goya lived for a further eight years. Hospitals were generally filthy and treatment was given by doctors treating patients at home. Treatments might include a 'change of air', vomiting, laxatives, bleeding or leeches. Medicines were mainly botanical but also included mercury, arsenic, iron and phosphorous. | |
