Healthy heart scan. Coloured gamma scan (scintigram) of a transverse section through the left ventricle of a healthy human heart. In this view, myocardial muscle tissue is seen as a semi- circle (pink, red, yellow & green) around the chamber of the left ventricle. The thick heart muscle pumps blood from the left ventricle all over the body. The most active muscle areas are white. Gamma scanning involves introducing a radioactive tracer,in this case Technetium-99m,into the bloodstream. Here the tracer is taken up by heart muscle and detected by a gamma camera. The health of the tissue can then be examined. | |
