Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, 1946. Session of the trials of high-ranking Nazi Party, government and military leaders conducted by the International Military Tribunal at the Palace of Justice, Nuremberg, Germany. This is the first and best-known of the trials, featuring major war crime organisations and 24 accused war criminals (some tried in absentia). The trial took place from 20 November 1945 to 1 October 1946. The chart on the wall shows the position of German police leader Ernst Kaltenbrunner within the Nazi system. The judges are at far right, the lawyers are at centre, and the defendants are at far left being guarded by military police. The defendants included Karl Donitz, Hermann Goring and Rudolf Hess. The sentences ranged from acquittal to life imprisonment and death. Kaltenbrunner was among those sentence to death and hanged on 16 October 1946. Photographed on 2 January 1946 | |
