Young galaxy in the early universe, illustration. This artwork is based on ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) observations of the galaxy MACS1149-JD1. This galaxy is 13.28 billion light years from Earth in the constellation of Leo. The galaxy is seen as it was when the universe was only 500 million years old, or less than 4 percent its current age. The observations revealed faint traces of oxygen, suggesting that rich chemical environments evolved relatively quickly in the early universe. The results of the observations were published in 2018. | |
