Healthy heart muscle. False-colour computer enhanced gamma scan of a healthy human heart (seen in transverse section). In this view, myocardial tissue is seen as a semi-circle (red and white) surrounding the left ventricle of the heart. This heart muscle tissue is active and well supplied with blood; it has absorbed the injected radio- active product in different concentrations, with the white area most dense. Yellow and green areas absorb less radioactivity. Gamma scanning (scinti- graphy) involves introducing a radioactive liquid into the bloodstream, which is taken up by certain organs and detected by a gamma camera. Slices"" of healthy or diseased tissue can then be examined." | |
