Nicotine addiction enzyme therapy. Molecular model of the enzyme nicotine oxidoreductase (NicA2, ribbons) binding to a nicotine molecule (yellow tubular carbon atoms) that is complexed with a flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) molecule (white spherical carbon atoms). NicA2 is a bacterial flavoenzyme, which catalyzes the first step of nicotine catabolism by oxidizing S-nicotine into N-methyl-myosmine. It has been proposed as a drug to treat nicotine addiction because of its substrate binding affinity. Nicotine is the addictive chemical found in cigarettes (lit cigarette at lower left) and similar products, obtained from sources such as the tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum). | |
