Melanoma in situ on the skin of a 77-year-old woman. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that arises from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. The main cause of melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. It is an aggressive cancer that often spreads (metastasizes) to other parts of the body. Treatment is with surgical excision of the melanoma. This is a less aggressive form of melanoma known as melanoma in situ. Microinvasion is also present, a slow and localised form of spread of the cancer. For the size of this melanoma being measured, see image C040/1006. | |
