When an injury reaches the dermis, the capillaries within it burst, causing haemorrhaging. A blood clot then forms at the bottom of the wound to stop the bleeding. The blood clot turns into a scab, which protects the injured tissues from infection and prevents their dehydration. The cells in the dermis and in the capillaries multiply to form a new tissue that pushes the scab up to the surface of the epidermis. Once the healing process is complete, the scab drops off, leaving a scar in its place. | |
