Colour-enhanced SEM of hair from a dairy cow housed in a barn. Image width: 354 micrometres. Magnification: 280x if the image is printed 10 cm wide. Carefully selected hair samples from the neck without any damage including the tip of a hair are shown. The patterns of the keratin scales appear to be well developed and uniform. On an average, however, many hair showed areas damaged mechanically to various extent. As temperatures decline during the fall, cattle kept outdoors (unlike those kept in barns) grow a longer hair coat, which provides a much higher level of insulation by trapping more pockets of air within the hair. Letting cattle adapt naturally to cooling temperatures is a good strategy which reduces overall stress on the animals. | |
