Sheep tick proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the proboscis from the tick Ixodes ricinus, the principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe. The body of the tick is visible in the background. The proboscis is serrated and used to penetrate the skin of the host. The tick then sucks the host blood using its hypostome. Ixodes ricinus is a parasitic mite which can feed on mammalian, reptilian or avian blood. This tick causes Lyme disease by transmitting the bacteria Borrelia burgdoferi to the host during feeding. Lyme disease results in fever and inflammation of joints. Magnification: x180 at 6x6cm size. | |
