Bilharzia fluke. Light micrograph (LM) of an adult male fluke of Schistosoma mansoni, which causes bilharzia (schistosomiasis). The male's head is at upper left. The female adult fluke lives in a cleft just below the male worm's head (not visible). Flukes inhabit blood vessels of the human intestine and bladder, releasing eggs into faeces or urine to contaminate freshwater. Infection occurs by contact with water. Bilharzia is a parasitic disease which may cause serious liver, kidney and bladder complications. Treatment is with a drug to kill the flukes, such as praziquantel.
