Compost ciliate. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a suctorian ciliate with bacteria in a compost heap. Compost is made by stacking garden waste and vegetable trimmings into a heap. The heap is degraded by various saprophytic organisms and the resulting brown, crumbly compost is used to enrich the soil. Here is an immature protozoan (blue) belonging to the order Suctoria. It feeds on other protozoa using its cilia (long processes). They adhere to prey and are then used, straw-like, to suck out the prey's body contents. The background (brown) is composed of numerous bacteria. Magnification: x1, 700 at 6x7cm size.
