Compost microorganisms. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of yeast cells and ciliates in a compost heap. Compost is made by stacking garden waste and vegetable trimmings into a heap. The heap is degraded by various saprophytic organisms and the resulting brown, crumbly compost is used to enrich the soil. Here, budding yeast cells (green, top) are seen beside a single sedentary Vorticella ciliate (orange). Below are two predatory suctorian ciliates (blue). Their long cilia (thin) adhere to prey and are then used, straw-like, to suck out the prey's body contents. The background (brown) is composed of numerous bacteria. Magnification: x550 at 6x7cm size.
