Computer illustration of bacteria on the tip of a pin. Although considered sharp and smooth on a human scale, it can be seen that the surface of the pin is rough and the tip is blunt on the scale of a bacterium. In terms of microns (thousandths of a millimetre), the tip of the pin is some 30 microns across, and the bacteria are about 5 microns long.
