Mole diagnosis. Close-up of a mole on the left upper back of a female patient. Also known as a pigmented, melanocytic, or melanotic, naevus, this skin mark is caused by an abnormality or overactivity of the melanocytes, the skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. Moles vary considerably in size and appearance. They are unusual at birth and tend to appear in childhood and adolescence. This mole is being examined because it had started itching. For a view of this mole and the patient's back, see image C038/2293. For a dermascope image, see C038/2292. | |
