Examining a junctional melanocytic naevus (a type of benign mole) on the skin on the back of a 56-year-old man. Moles are caused by an abnormality or proliferation of melanocytes, the skin cells that produce the pigment melanin. Most moles are harmless but they can turn cancerous so they should be examined at regular intervals through a magnifying lens and photographed with a scale bar as shown here.
