Ferrocene, molecular model. Ferrocene is an organometallic compound formed of two cyclopentadienyl rings (black and white) either side of an Fe2+ iron ion (orange). The shape of the molecule has led it and other related chemicals to be known as sandwich compounds. The cyclopentadienyl rings have each lost one hydrogen atom from their stable parent cyclopentadiene, giving them each a negative charge. The charge dissociates across the ring, and the entire ring bonds to the positively charged iron (II) ion, producing a stable, neutral compound. It has few practical uses but has been used as a fuel additive, and its anti- cancer properties are being investigated. | |
