A drawing from one of the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) illustrating various types of water lifting devices, including water wheels and Archimedes-type screw pumps. Hydraulic machines were one of Leonardo's main interests for forty years as part of his numerous studies in fluid mechanics and its applications. He conducted many experiments in his investigations into fluid flow vortices, for example, and recorded his observations. Though the study of fluid mechanics goes back as far as Archimedes in Ancient Greece, its rapid advancement began with Leonardo. A full analysis and proper evaluation of his researches in the notes and drawings require scientific knowledge and technical experience in the subject. | |
