Aurochs (Bos primigenius), illustration. This extinct prehistoric wild cattle lived from the Early Pleistocene well into the modern era, with the last recorded individual dying in Poland in 1627. It was comparable in size to the North American bison, reaching a shoulder height of 1.8 metres. At its widest extent, it ranged through Europe, Asia and North Africa. Aurochs are the ancestor of today's domestic cattle. | |
