Hippopotamus gorgops, illustration. This extinct prehistoric hippopotamus lived from the Late Miocene to the Middle Pleistocene (around 11 million to 780, 000 years ago). It was larger than modern hippos, reaching lengths of 4.3 metres and feeding on aquatic vegetation. Its fossils have been found in Africa and Europe. Here, it is shown in papyrus swamps in East Africa. Its eyes were elevated, and used like periscopes to look above the water while submerged (example in background). | |
