Vascular malformation. Large birthmark on the right leg of a 27-year-old man. This birthmark was initially only a few centimetres across on the back of the leg at birth. It grew to the present size, and has now stopped growing. Birthmarks such as these are known as capillary vascular malformations, a group of birthmarks that includes the port-wine stain (naevus flammeus). These birthmarks are caused by expanded blood vessels just beneath the skin.
