Cholesterol embolism. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram of the heart, aorta and renal arteries in a 68-year-old man with cholesterol embolism. This is a condition where cholesterol can accumulate on artery walls, and then detach and lodge elsewhere as an embolism, blocking the blood supply. In this case, the condition has affected the blood supply to the toes. Also present on this scan are aortic ulcers and atherosclerotic plaques (atheromas) in the aorta below the kidneys (lower centre) and in the iliac arteries (bottom) leading to the legs. There is also a stent on the heart's right coronary artery. | |
