Enterococcus faecalis. Computer illustration of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (previously known as Streptococcus faecalis). E. faecalis exists as part of the normal flora of the human alimentary tract, but may cause infections in the urinary tract. It may cause bacterial endocarditis in infants, and in adults after gynaecological or genito-urinary surgery. It can also cause pneumonia. The bacteria is one of the so called superbugs, which are resistant to antibiotics. | |
