Kernmantle is a German word which translates to core (kern) and jacket (mantel). This highly resilient design of rope has a lower tendency to kink and is easier to handle than traditional twisted or laid rope. It is composed of an inner core of twisted polyester or nylon fibres enclosed in a braided shell. Because of its high strength, UV and abrasion resistance it has multiple uses and comes in various grades and strengths including paracord parachute cord, climbing rope, marine rope and guy ropes. Where the rope will be exposed to water, nylon while, generally stronger than polyester, loses strength when wet and will sink in water. | |
