One of several historical Chinese astronomical instruments at the Beijing Ancient Observatory in Beijing, China, an astronomical observatory that dates from the 1400s. The moondial was designed to determine time by measuring the change in direction of the Moon: two concentric discs and a vernier in the centre were used to indicate the time.
