Myeloid leukaemia. Gross clinical specimen of a sectioned kidney in a case of myeloid leukaemia. Healthy tissue (dark red) contrasts with unhealthy (yellow) tissue. Leukaemia is excessive production of white blood cells. In this case, a leukaemia of the myeloid tissue found in bone marrow. Myeloid tissue (also known as red marrow) is where the blood cells and proteins are produced. Production of the wrong proteins can damage and clog up the kidney blood filtration structures. Renal failure will require dialysis or a kidney transplant. The leukaemia is treated with drug therapy and bone marrow transplants. | |
