Lymphocyte. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing the large central nucleus (brown) of a lymphocyte (white blood cell). Surrounding this is the cytoplasm (yellow), containing mitochondria (orange). Lymphocytes are cells of the human immune system. They are produced in bone marrow and mature in the thymus gland. T-lymphocytes are susceptible to infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS. There are three major types of white blood cells: granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes, which protect the body against invasion by foreign substances.
