| Light micrograph (LM) of Calcium carbonate crystals. Calcium carbonate is an inorganic chemical compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. It is mineral made of calcium, carbon and oxygen that is widely disperse and abundant in seawater. It is a common mineral found in rock formations such as: aragonite, calcite, chalk, limestone, marble and travertine. It is also the main component of seashells and the shells of land snails. It can be made synthetically by reaction of calcium chloride and sodium carbonate in water solution, or by passing carbon dioxide through a suspension of hydrated in water. It is commonly used as an antacid, and is the active ingredient in agricultural lime. Magnification: x30 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
