Finding a melting point. A Thiele tube is set up to discover the melting point of sulfur. A small sample of sulfur in a capillary tube is attached to a thermometer and inserted into the Thiele tube. The oil in the Thiele tube is then heated with a Bunsen burner and the temperature read off when the sulfur melts. This method works for any substance with a melting point below 370 degrees centigrade the boiling point of paraffin oil - an oil with a very high boiling point. | |
