Mariner 4 image of Mars,1965. Hand-coloured data strips for the first image data returned from Mars by the Mariner 4 spacecraft in 1965. The digital image data was converted to numbers printed on strips of paper, and employees from the Telecommunications Section at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory attached these strips side by side to a display panel and hand-coloured the numbers. The completed image, which compared favourably with the official processed image, was framed and presented to the then-JPL director William H. Pickering. Mariner 4 launched on 28 November 1964,obtaining 22 images as it travelled past Mars on 14 and 15 July 1965. The images revealed craters and a desert-like surface | |
